If you do not have a driver’s license, use another ID number. The Department of Motor Vehicles issues Identification cards to persons who do not have driver's licenses. DO NOT use your social security number.
Include your identifying number even on property that includes a manufacturer’s serial number to make you property more recoverable. By using an identifying number, you make it possible for any law enforcement agency to quickly trace the rightful owner of recovered property.

OPERATION I.D. has three parts:
1. MARK YOUR VALUABLES
WITH AN IDENTIFYING NUMBER
Use an electric engraver to mark your valuables for OPERATION IDENTIFICATION. You can borrow an engraver from the Rehoboth Beach Police Department.
Mark your valuables by inscribing your driver's license number followed by the letters of your state. A typical marking should look something like this:
1233456 DE
It’s a program that has proven to be effective in reducing burglary in communities where it has been properly implemented.
Now more than ever law enforcement agencies are solving more and more burglaries and are retrieving stolen goods. However, the task of returning stolen merchandise to the rightful owners is often a difficult task and at times an impossible task. Unmarked merchandise gives no clues as to who the rightful owner is, and too often, the rightful owner has no means to prove ownership of, say, an expensive piece of heirloom jewelry. OPERATION IDENTIFICATION assists in the return of recovered merchandise to its rightful owner.
WHAT IS
OPERATION IDENTIFICATION?
OPERATION IDENTIFICATION is effective because easily identified property is hard for a burglar to dispose of. It can be traced back to you. And, if the burglar is caught with it in his possession, it is solid evidence of possession of stolen goods.
2. RECORD DESCRIPTIONS
OF ALL YOUR VALUABLES
You should complete two copies of your marked property and keep one copy in a safe place around your home or office, and keep another copy in a safe deposit box or other secure location. It’s also a good idea to take color photographs of valuables that cannot be marked, and file the photos with the copies of the property list.
In case of burglary, you’ll be able to describe stolen property quickly, which will help police in their attempt to recover it.
3. DISPLAY OPERATION
IDENTIFICATION STICKERS
The Rehoboth Beach Police Department will provide you stickers when you have completed your marking and listing tasks. You should display an Operation Identification sticker on all your exterior doors.
Operation Identification stickers tell would-be burglars that goods stolen from your home or business will be hard to dispose of – and, if found in their possession, are evidence of their guilt.
